Louisville has high hopes for Genentech
Now that biotechnology giant Genentech has opened its Louisville distribution center early, economic-development officials are hoping the company will pick the city for its future manufacturing needs as well.
The center at Jefferson Riverport International is the first U.S. facility outside California for the San Francisco company, whose manufacturing facilities are straining to meet demand. Genentech is one of the world's largest biotechnology companies as measured by its $88 billion market capitalization, slightly behind that of biotech rival Amgen.
It has built its recent success on blockbuster cancer drugs, including Rituxan for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Avastin for colon cancer. Read more.

Sullivan University to start college of pharmacy
A college of pharmacy is set to open in about two years at Sullivan University. The new program will be the first doctorate-level program offered by Louisville-based Sullivan University, which has several master's degree programs in addition to associate's and bachelor's degree programs. The university is starting the program to address a growing shortage of pharmacists across the country. Read more.

Faulkner Real Estate to spin off health care venture
Louisville's Faulkner Real Estate Corp., one of Kentucky's largest developers of commercial properties, plans to spin off a new company that will specialize in the development, acquisition and management of health care-related real estate.
Faulkner Healthcare Real Estate will launch May 1 as a separate company with its own identity, logo and Web site, www.faulknerhealthcare.com. But it will operate under the Faulkner Real Estate umbrella. Faulkner Real Estate, which will continue to develop Class A office space and commercial retail centers, already owns a significant medical office portfolio in Louisville that it manages and leases for Norton. The new company will pursue development and acquisition deals outside of Louisville. Read more.

Stem-cell research at U of L 'major step'
The video is dramatic.
A laboratory rat unable to use its right front paw because of a spinal cord injury struggles to walk across a rope, loses its footing and falls.
Then a rat that had the same injury scurries across the rope without a problem, just weeks after an injection containing adult stem cells from a human nose that were transformed into nerve cells.
The rats are part of a line of groundbreaking research at the University of Louisville that could lead to treatments for spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and other nerve disorders.
The rat's improvement after the injection is the second major discovery in the past few months at UofL that promises progress without using embryonic stem cells.
In December, a research team at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center announced it had transformed stem cells from adult mice into brain, heart, nerve and pancreatic cells.
The nasal stem-cell research - published most recently last week in the journal "Stem Cells" - involves using certain chemicals to direct the cells to become neurons, which send and receive messages between the nervous system and other parts of the body. Read more.

SHPS deal bringing 400 call center jobs
SHPS Inc. has hired more than 200 workers at its Louisville call center since December and plans to hire that many more to meet increased demand resulting from a new contract.
The company, which will have about 1,700 employees in Louisville following its hiring spree, also is adding office space in Louisville and moving some of its employees to accommodate the growth.
Louisville-based SHPS offers a variety of outsourced products and services. It was formed in 1997 as primarily a third-party administrator of employee benefits, case-management and disease-management plans.
In recent years, the company has expanded its focus to include more health-related services for employers. The company provides health information to clients' employees and manages benefits such as health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts. Read more.

$55 million reconstruction of expo center's East Wing begins
Work is beginning on a $55 million project that will see the complete demolition of the East Wing at the Kentucky Exposition Center and its replacement with a more modern, state-of-the-art exhibit facility.
The massive reconstruction effort will transform 215,000 square feet of outdated trade show space in the East Wing and a portion of the center's East Hall into what will be considered Class A space.
The reconstruction project is actually phase II of the Kentucky Exposition Center's master plan. Phase I, a $52 million initiative, saw the construction of the recently opened South Wing C, which added 166,500 square feet of Class A exhibit space and nearly 70,000 square feet of meeting and conference space.
Construction is expected to be completed in October 2007. Read more.

Louisville Metro launches loan program for startups
Louisville-Jefferson County Metro Government is launching a new loan program geared toward helping startup businesses get off the ground.
The Micro Lending Program, which will be administered by the Louisville Metro Development Authority, will offer primary financing for new companies with loans of $10,000 to $30,000. The loans are aimed at small businesses unable to get a typical bank loan or that have limited resources. Read more.

Development proposal approved for River Ridge site
AML Inc., a Floyds Knobs general contractor, is eyeing River Ridge Commerce Center, a 6,000-acre complex that is being redeveloped as an office and industrial park, as a future development site.
AML would construct a 100,000-square-foot facility on the now-vacant site. The planned building would have a truck-loading area in the rear of the facility and 26- to 30-foot ceilings. It would be suitable for a variety of uses, such as manufacturing, warehouse, distribution and/or office space. Read more.

Council moves to authorize sale of land for downtown condos
 After extensive delays, the partners planning the $25 million, 82-condominium project called Fleur-de-lis across from Louisville Slugger Field are proceeding with the development. The Louisville Metro Council introduced a measure declaring as surplus the 1.1-acre site on the southwest corner of Main and Preston streets and authorizing its sale to the developers. The city acquired the land in the mid-1990s in the deal that led to the ballpark's construction. The units will have 1,000 to 2,100 square feet of space. Interiors will be built to suit buyers, with hardwood floors, marble countertops, bay windows overlooking the street and patios. About 20,000 square feet of first-level commercial space is planned, half of which probably will go to a restaurant. The first units should be ready for occupancy by the middle of next year. Oldham panel approves plan for commercial-office development
A development proposed in La Grange could bring Oldham County two more restaurants, a Walgreens drugstore and other offices and businesses.
Milestone Development Group of Prospect plans 75,250 square feet of commercial and office space at the interchange of Interstate 71 and Ky. 53.
The development could be completed in 2008. Read more.

Business park may drive growth
Developers John Hollenbach and Greg Oakley are seeking permission to build a 283-acre business park near Jeffersontown. The developers have agreed to spend an estimated $7 to $8 million to install a four-mile sewer main, bringing sewers to a 4.6-square-mile area and opening up the whole area for development.
